SENATOR SMITH: How fast was the boat going at that time? MR. LIGHTOLLER: About 21 1/2 or 22. SENATOR SMITH: 211/2 or 22 knots? MR. LIGHTOLLER: Yes, sir. SENATOR SMITH: Was that her maximum speed? MR. LIGHTOLLER: I do not know, sir. I could not say, sir. . . . SENATOR SMITH: Did you have any instructions from anybody to exhaust that power? MR. LIGHTOLLER: None. SENATOR SMITH: Did you have any ambition of your own to see it exhausted? MR. LIGHTOLLER: Yes; I dare say. SENATOR SMITH: You wanted her to go as fast as she could? MR. SENATOR SMITH: What was the complement of your ship that night, in officers? MR. LIGHTOLLER: You mean on deck, sir? SENATOR SMITH: Yes, sir. MR. LIGHTOLLER: Myself and two juniors. SENATOR SMITH: Where were those two juniors stationed? MR. LIGHTOLLER: They have various duties to perform, taking the various parts of the ship; sometimes in the wheelhouse; at different periods one has to go the whole rounds of the ship and see that everything is in order. SENATOR SMITH: When you came on watch at 6 o'clock, was the captain on the bridge, or did you see him? MR. LIGHTOLLER: I didn't see him at 6 o'clock. |

LIGHTOLLER : À un moment ou à un autre; oui. . . . LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous étiez impatient de le voir testé? M. LIGHTOLLER : Pas nécessairement anxieux. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Intéressé, cependant? M. LIGHTOLLER : Intéressé; oui. . . . LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : La vigie a-t-elle été augmentée ce soir-là après que vous en ayez pris connaissance? M. LIGHTOLLER : Non, monsieur. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Quel était l’effectif de votre navire cette nuit-là, en officiers? M. LIGHTOLLER : Vous voulez dire sur le pont, monsieur? LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Oui, monsieur. M. LIGHTOLLER : Moi-même et deux juniors. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Où ces deux juniors étaient-ils stationnés? M. LIGHTOLLER : Ils ont diverses tâches à accomplir, prenant les différentes parties du navire; parfois dans la timonerie; à différentes périodes, il faut faire toutes les rondes du navire et voir que tout est en ordre. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Lorsque vous êtes arrivé à 6 heures, le capitaine était-il sur la passerelle ou l’avez-vous vu? M. LIGHTOLLER : Je ne l’ai pas vu à 6 heures. |
